Corinthians 1:1-9 - Salutation
Paul,
called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God and our brother
Sosthenes….I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God
that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been
enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind - just as the testimony
of Christ has been strengthened among you - so that you are not lacking in any
spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will
also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord
Jesus Christ. God is faithful; he called you into the fellowship of his son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Matthew
24:42-51 – The Faithful or the Unfaithful slave
Who
then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his
household, to give the other slave their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessed
is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. Truly, I tell you,
he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. But if that wicked slave
says to himself, My master is delayed, and he begins to beat his fellow slaves
and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that slave will come on a day
when he does not expect him and at an hour
that he does not know. He will cut him in pieces and put him with the
hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Father Dan Donovan opined that St. Paul’s
writings to the Corinthians are fascinating. He was a wandering preacher who
recognized that his messages were not his own but entrusted by God. It reflected
the teachings of the life of Jesus. St. Paul mentioned about grace, which pertains to gifts including forgiveness, reconciliation and new life, leading to the fruit
of grace, that is, peace. St. Paul emphasized his followers to accept the gifts
of grace.
